Hiking in the Murtal region

The so called “Zirbitzkogel” is one of the most popular mountains for hikes in Styria and with its 2,396 m the highest elevation of the Seetal Alps. The Zirbitzkogel can be climbed from different directions. What all these directions have in common? The breathtaking, unique view once you reached the mountain top.

Sabathyhütte

From the Sabathy hut, the route number 316 leads to the summit of the Zirbitzkogel. First, you come to the quaint Linderhütte and then to the picturesque Lindersee. From there the trail leads steeply up to the summit.

Waldheimhütte

The ascent from the Waldheimhütte is the most comfortable way to the mountaintop. The marked path leads across a meadow directly to a gravel road, which is also used by the host of the Zirbitzkogel shelter for transporting food. The last 170 meters of altitude will are steeper serpentines.

Winterleitenhütte

From the parking lot, just before the Winterleitenhütte, the well-marked hiking trail number 308 leads past two little lakes into the beautiful mountain landscape of the Seetal Alps. After crossing the basin, the so-called "Schreiber Steig" runs along steep mountain slopes and leads directly up to the summit.

Tip: Reward yourself with a traditional schnapps on the highest hut in Styria, the Helmut-Erd-Schutzhaus, on top of the Zirbitzkogel.

This hike at the eastern edge of the Seckau Alps terminates at the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Schnee and surely ranks among the most popular hiking destinations in the Murtal region. The Church at 1,822 metres above sea level impresses with its views of the Seetal Alps, the Styrian foothills and the Judenburg-Knittelfeld basin.

Tour data: 500 metres of cumulative elevation gain, 9.5 km and 2 hours and 45 minutes, medium difficulty

This pretty hike that mostly leads through forested terrain and magnificent meadows is located very close to the Red Bull Ring. Start from the parking lot in Sachendorf and follow the well signposted trail until you reach the ‘Tower in the Mountains’. These twin towers are 46 metres tall offering the perfect platform for breath-taking views of the Murtal region. Tip: Take a 1-Euro coin for the turnstile!

Tour data: 400 metres of cumulative elevation gain, 15 km and 4 hours, Low difficulty

An excellent trail to let your mind wander. You can start this hike directly at Hotel G’Schlössl Murtal. From here, you leisurely walk to Apfelberg via the wetlands of the Mur River. Following forestry roads and past the dog training facility, you reach Thalberghof via the main trail. After that, you follow a mountain path back to Großlobming, passing forests and meadows and taking in great views. The silence of nature and exercising gives you the opportunity to fully switch off.
